Charles Johnson was a nephew of James Brooke and entered his bachelor uncle’s service. When James Brooke passed away, Charles Johnson took his uncles name Brooke and succeeded as Rajah of Sarawak. During Rajah Charles Johnson Brooke’s rule, Sarawak was placed under British protection in 1888. As a protectorate of Britain, Sarawak gained a parliamentary government. Infrastructure investment included a railway and the development of natural resources after oil was discovered. Sarawak is located on the island of Borneo. It is currently one of two Malaysian states there and lies in the Northwest.

Charles Johnson had previously worked on board Admiral Henry Keppels’ ship which was used to clear up the piracy along Sarawak's coastline. He had lost an eye and replaced it with a glass one from a stuffed albatross. Charles Johnson Brooke had three sons by his wife but they all died from cholera during a long voyage back to England. His wife gave birth to three more sons of which the eldest, Charles Vyner Brooke, was to be the third Rajah of Sarawak. During his time as Rajah of Sarawak, he had abolished slavery and had become a benevolent and effective ruler. His legacy is everywhere in Kuching. It was he who built the Astana, Fort Margherita, the Courthouse, the Sarawak Museum and many other fine buildings(Charles Brook Memorial, 2015). Charles Brooke passed away in 1917 having ruled Sarawak for 49 years(Sarawak Government, 2015).

This one cent Sarawak coin has a portrait of Charles Brooke along with the legend C. BROOKE RAJAH on the obverse . The reverse has the denomination in the centre and surrounded by a laurel wreath. The legend reads SARAWAK 1870 .
